The COVID-19 pandemic tested the mettle of communities, government systems and individuals globally. Here in the U.S., each state and municipality had its own particular approach – some more conservative and others more engaged.

Many cities spent a period of time at the top of the national list of COVID cases since the pandemic began, and Detroit has been there more than once. But the story beyond the numbers reveals just as much, if not more, about the character of a place and the people in it.
The Motor City made its mark on the world as a hub of innovation, renaissance and grit – and the actions of its leaders during the pandemic – from government, business, healthcare, nonprofit, media and more – demonstrated that spirit of innovation, cooperation and perseverance.
From the quick response of government to secure Detroiters’ safety, make protective and life-saving medical equipment, testing and vaccines available – to businesses and nonprofits mobilizing to ensure residents’ basic needs were covered, and that businesses could stay afloat during an indefinite period of shutdown – Detroit’s can-do attitude is a case study in what can be accomplished when people work together to help one another.
Detroit Public Television’s One Detroit led early with:
- Zoom interviews on the most important issues to keep Detroiters informed,
- livestream and broadcast town halls featuring live Q&A with local leaders,
- distributing distance-learning resources to families and schools for at-home use,
- providing uplifting inspiration with the launch of a weekly arts & culture program.
This timeline offers a few highlights of One Detroit’s coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many of the innovations to help protect lives, mental health, businesses and the economy:
